Abstract:
The present research aims at revealing some characteristics of oath in the holy Quran through the study of its translation into French language done by Hamidullah.
According to its definition in most dictionaries, the oath is a formal declaration or promise to fulfill a pledge calling upon someone or something that the oath maker considers sacred, usually God, as a witness.
The first thing to be noticed about oath is its universal use; it was known and used since the very early age by many people.
The pre- Islamic Arabs, for example, used to swear to their gods, to their lives, to their fathers…etc. But when Islam came, it forbade these forms of oath so that the Muslim can only swear to Allah and to no one but Him.
Many examples of oath forms are mentioned in the Quran as a way to affirm many serious facts.
Allah swore to Himself and to many of His creatures like His holy book, His prophet’s life, the sun, the moon, the stars and other things to affirm the truth of some important things such as the greatness of
