Résumé:
This thesis mainly intends at investigating the effect of a method which includes the use of extensive and intensive reading and writing, use of games and movies, in enriching and improving Algerian high school pupils’ vocabulary stock and the impact it has on the English writing skill. If we add two more hours per week, learners’ proficiency and motivation will likely improve. So to validate and prove the
efficiency of suggested activities and techniques, an experiment has been designed to collect data about the pupils’ outcomes in an experimental and a control group.
Moreover, a set of activities has been proposed to consolidate the effectiveness of the new method over the conventional one. Results of both groups of the experiment revealed that the method under investigation proved to be successful in enriching pupils’ vocabulary stock linked to the theme of the unit than does the conventional method provided in the first year textbook, which confirms our hypothesis. Results also shed light on the unconscious improvement of strategy use, by the pupils in
acquiring a new vocabulary. Pupils seek clarification, ask for synonyms, look for definitions in the dictionary and take notes. Shy pupils as less competent ones participate in class discussions and give their opinion.
