This work is devoted to the phytochemical study of Centaurea microcarpa Coss. and Dur. of the genus Centaurea (Asteraceae), endemic to Algeria and Tunisia. The phytochemical investigation of chloroform and ethyl acetate extracts obtained from the aerial parts of C. microcarpa, led to the isolation and identification of nine products.
The chloroform extract of this plant has permitted to isolate and identify four compounds which were: one cyanogenic glycoside, an eudesmanolide and tow steroids as a mixture each. While the ethyl acetate extract gave five compounds which were three flavonoids, one lignane and one cyanogenic. The structural elucidation of these compounds were established by modern spectroscopic methods including ultraviolet spectrophotometer, NMR spectroscopy (1H, 13C, DEPT, COSY, HSQC, HMBC and ROESY) and mass spectrometry HESI (+) and IEMS, and by comparison with the literature data.
