Abstract:
The phenomenon of urbanization underwent profound changes just after independence in 1962. The country was then characterised by an urban structure dominated by the class of large cities such as Algiers, Oran, Constantine and Annaba and gradually this logic of distribution seems to give way to another configuration that did appear other levels, no less important than the top class, inherited from the colonial period. Currently and following a proactive policy led by the Algerian State in favour of the lower echelons of the hierarchy of plans grouping the category of small towns which is today the most representative in the urban network. This form of urbanization, set up as part of the process of democratization of urban facts that has woven a new building to the Algerian urban network.
