Translating the Algerian literary workswritten in French into Arabic raisesseveral theoretical issues, particularly when dealing with the reader’s reception and the translation style. Indeed, the modern approaches in translation studiesconsider optimum translation a mechanical process of converting one language into another while includingall the cultural features imbedded in the source language. This approach seems, however, not to be so applicable when translatinginto Arabicthe Algerian literature written in French, an instance of which is the works of Malek Haddad.This is because, in this case, the writer shares, more or less,the same culture with the translator. Such asituation allowed us to conclude of the existence of a particulartype of literary translationconverting a particular literary genre. This literary genre arose in violent historical and social circumstances, and within a short and condensed period of history. This situation stimulated us to observe and analysehow two translators, Sami al Djoundi and CharafeddineChokri, dealt withMalek Haddad’s French text in the novel ‘l’élève et la leçon’, the corpus of this research, and how they coped with itsvery specific stylistic features. Our analysis was withinthe framework of the contemporary stylisticapproaches in translation studies. The results of the research confirm the hypotheses made at the outset. |
