dc.description.abstract This research focuses on two main aspects, the first one has a rolation to Functional approach. In its last model which is “Functional Discourse Grammar” . The second aspect is The structure of discourse in the theatrical dialogue, This is under the title: The structure of discourse in the theatrical dialogue, in light of the Functional approach, (theater of Tawfiq al-Hakeem as a model). The study was distributed on two sides; Theoretical and applied parts. The first part devoted to the theoretical concepts. Especially to the introducing the theory and its primitives. And its models starting from the first one wich developed by Simon C. Dik at the University of Amsterdam in the 1970s. and standard version, and so to the latest version (FDG); This has led to a renaming of the theory to functional discourse grammar. The second part dedicated to apply the different concepts of the theory on the play of “Al-soltan Alhaeer” of “Tawfiq al-Hakim” as a model to show the improvement of the different adequacies of the theory. The study shows that there are richness of the pragmatic and the semantic aspects in the interpersonal level and the representational of the Discourse in the play. The study also shows that when we moved From Deep to Surface Structure there are some phonological characteristics are strongly clear if the analyzing of the play taking place
