dc.description.abstract "Wound repair and healing are constant problems in surgery. The surgeon makes more incisions in the abdomen than in any other region. It must be concerned with the best repair methods. The objective of our work was to compare the effect of different suturing techniques on the strength and resistance of the midline laparotomy wound to intra-abdominal pressure and the quality of the scar in order to identify the suture technique that allows the strongest scar and gives the optimal healing. 40 female Wistar rats divided into groups of 5 individuals were used in the study. Four suturing techniques have been used to reconstruct the medial laparotomy wound. The time required and the length of thread used for each technique were recorded. The resistance of the wound to dehiscence was measured by inserting a balloon into the abdomen and filling it with air until the burst of the abdomen. The scar of the laparotomy wound was examined and the quality of the scar and its resistance were evaluated. Pressure was measured in millimeters of mercury. Results show that realization of continuous suture techniques needs less thread and requires a shorter time compared to interrupted sutures techniques. The Reverdin suturing technique is more resistant to pressure compared to other techniques and after seven days the quality of the scar is better in continuous sutures techniques.
